Highlights
Bristol, Virginia’s police department is now using facial recognition technology powered by Clearview AI, and it is doing so by the book. This launch comes after Virginia lifted a statewide ban and set up some of the toughest rules in the country. The tech must hit high accuracy marks (over 98%) and show minimal bias, especially for race and gender. Bristol PD even released a 27-page playbook outlining exactly how it works, including yearly independent audits. Officers can’t just scan random faces either-they’ll use it to match suspect photos, like those from CCTV, in active investigations only.
